AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 153 (January 14, 1992)
SUPERNOVA IN NGC 1380
The Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams has informed us of the photographic discovery of a supernova in NGC 1380 by William Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, on 1992 January 11.16 UT at magnitude 12.8.
The supernova was independently discovered visually on January 12.7 by N. Brown, Perth, W. Australia, at magnitude 13.0.
The supernova is offset from the galaxy's center 3" west and 62" north. The position of the supernova (epoch 1950), measured by Robert NcNaught, Siding Spring Observatory, is:
R.A. 03 34 21.52 Dec. -35 07 22.5
Astronomers evaluating a spectrogram taken with the Anglo-Australian Telescope indicate this supernova to be type Ia, near maximum light.
Observations of the supernova include:
1992 Jan. 7 UT, not visible (ptg, W. Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile);
11.16, 12.8 ptg (Liller);
12.45, 13.0 (R. McNaught, Siding Spring Obs., Australia);
12.7, 13.0 (N. Brown, Perth, W. Australia);
Please use the accompanying 'd' scale chart and the color-reversed Thompson/Bryan chart of NGC 1380 to observe the supernova and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters, so we may inform the astronomical community. Congratulations to Bill and to N. Brown on their discoveries!
NOVA PUPPIS 1991 [V351 Pup]
This nova continues to be quite bright, as the following observations indicate:
1992 Jan. 5.54 UT, 8.2 (A. Pearce, Scarborough, W. Australia);
6.55, 8.5 (Pearce);
7.54, 8.7 (Pearce);
7.76, 9.0 (D. Overbeek, Edenvale, S. Africa);
8.1, 9.1 (Overbeek);
8.27, 8.1 (C. Scovil, Stamford, CT);
8.62, 8.7 (Pearce);
9.1, 9.0 (Overbeek);

14.12, 8.7 (C. Stephan, Sebring, FL);
14.33, 8.6 (R. Royer, Lakewood, CA);
Please note that the position of the nova on the chart issued with AAVSO Alert Notice 152 should be corrected by moving the nova 1/4 of an inch to the right, that is, to the east. Please continue to monitor N Pup 91 and call in your observations to AAVSO Headquarters.
Janet Mattei, who is still away from Headquarters, and I thank you very much for your valuable observations and astronomical efforts.
Clear skies and good observing!
