Charts: Finder charts for this object may be plotted by entering the coordinates above into VSP: http://www.aavso.org/vsp
There are a few existing comparison stars to the southeast of the variable on a C-scale chart; more comparison stars will be added as soon as a sequence has become available.
Notes:
Multiple confirmations were reported after the object was posted on the CBAT unconfirmed objects webpage. Observations of the field prior to the current outburst indicated no object visible at those coordinates, the faintest of which (UK Schmidt Telescope red plates, checked by E. Guido and G. Sostero, Remanzacco, Italy) showed no object down to 20th magnitude on 1991 August 11.
Several observations published in IAU Circular 8947 suggest the nova has remained relatively constant at its discovery magnitude, remaining around m(vis) ~ 10.2.
Spectra for this object have not been published so the nova type is not yet known.
All discovery information in this Alert Notice is from IAU Circular 8947, Daniel W.E. Green, editor. For full details on the discovery and subsequent observations, please see the circular.
Please submit data to the AAVSO using the name "N OPH 2008", or the alias "Nova Oph 2008", or "VSX J173950.9-235000". This object has been assigned the AAVSO Unique ID of "000-BFT-356".
Congratulations to the discoverers!
Good observing,
Matthew Templeton & Elizabeth Waagen, AAVSO
