Special Notice #189: Request for observations of KT Eri / Nova Eri 2009

January 20, 2010

Dr. Julian Osborne, University of Leicester, has requested ground-based observations of the nova KT Eri. Dr. Osborne is requesting these observations to provide optical photometry in support of ongoing X-ray observations of this source by the Swift satellite, along with a pending request for Chandra spectroscopy observations. The X-ray campaign is being led by Dr. Mike Bode (Liverpool John Moores University). KT Eri is currently in a soft X-ray-bright phase; early results comparing Swift X-ray photometry to AAVSO optical photometry suggests correlated variability is occurring.

Observers are asked to continue monitoring this source for as long as is practical given the constraints of their equipment and observing location. Filtered time-series observations with good signal to noise are preferred; at a minimum, observers should obtain S/N of at least 10, and preferably much higher. If filtering significantly increases exposure times or reduces signal-to-noise, please observe unfiltered but clearly note your comparison star magnitude(s).

KT Eri (Nova Eri 2009) is located at the following (J2000) coordinates:

RA: 04:47:54.21 , Dec: -10 10 43.1

Charts for KT Eri may be plotted using AAVSO's VSP:

Please report all observations to the AAVSO using the name "KT ERI".
