IAU Circular No. 8810 (Daniel W. E. Green, ed.) announces the discovery of a possible nova in Scorpius; this object [V1281 Sco] is not to be confused with 1651-32 V1280 Sco (N Sco 2007, see AAVSO Alert Notice 346).
Coordinates provided by K. Itagaki, Yamagata, Japan:
R.A.= 16h 56m 59.35s, Decl. = -35o 21' 50.2" (2000.0)
Independent discoveries by:
- Yuji Nakamura, Kameyama, Mie, Japan, (via H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University)
<12.0 CCD, Feb. 14.8575 UT
9.3 CCD, Feb. 19.8593
- Hideo Nishimura, Miyawaki, Kakegawa, Japan, (via S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan)

9.2 photographic, Feb. 20.8370
Yamaoka's report includes that the new object is within 30" of the red star GSC 7367.712 (R.A. = 16h 56m 58.0s, Decl. = -35o 21' 39", equinox 2000.0, mag 13.3; variable according to ASAS).
Itagaki notes that nothing is visible at this position on the Digitized Sky Survey, so it is likely to be a nova. Itagaki also provides an observation of magnitude 8.8 unfiltered CCD on Feb. 20.85 UT.
An AAVSO sequence is in preparation and chart information will be announced.
Please report observations to the AAVSO as: 1650-35 N SCO 07#2
Thank you and good observing!
