I frequently have this same problem. I've found that clearing my browser's cookies does the trick. The quickest way to do this (in Chrome) is to hit control-shift-delete to bring up the options to clear browsing data. Select just the "Cookies and other site data" option and (to be safe) set the Time Range to "All time." Note that this will log you out of every other web site, and may also force you to re-enter data on some sites when you visit them the next time. A more targeted approach is to use the developer tools (hit F12 to bring that up in Chrome) and delete just the PHPSESSID cookie under the Application tab. This will only log you out of the main AAVSO page, and reset things so you can cleanly log into VSX. I suspect the main site and VSX are trying to use that same cookie, creating a conflict if you've already logged into www.aavso.org.

Thanks for this information. I only use Firefox on ubuntu linux. The login problem went away all by itself. I did nothing at all.
